Whether I am grocery shopping, eating at a restaurant, attending an event, or stopping at the gas station for a quick snack, I am bombarded with unhealthy toxic food choices. Finding a healthy gluten/casein/toxic free (GF/CF/TF) food choice is like playing a game of Where’s Waldo with an illustrator who uses my senses, brain, and innate desires against me. What to choose? What not to choose? Cravings, smells, subliminal and sublime messages on prepackaged junk food all work against my intellect and rationale until I either leave or breath deeply and search for the things I can eat. “What do you think about ________?” My response to this question usually involves some form of circular reasoning or begging the question. Why do you seek my answer? Is your question loaded with bias? Is your goal contention or knowledge? Who am I to provide the answer? When one seeks wisdom, one must know the source from which it flows.
Water may flow abundantly or drip slowly one drop at a time. It dissipates and awaits. Water may be natural, filtered, or contaminated. Salty, chlorinated, or runoff. Nevertheless, it is water. It is life! The quest for water never ends nor do questions about life.
If I collect water, I must use a vessel. Much like collecting knowledge, I must know the source from which my water flows. I must ensure my vessel is made of high quality material because I want pure water for eternity. Continue reading
“Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” -Robert F. Kennedy
America is a great country filled with hard-workers, brilliant thinkers, leaders, and billionaires. Ideas and advances which perpetuate progress have the ability to create unimaginable ripples – with both positive and negative consequences. America’s healthcare rating is the worst in the developed world and the U.S. ranks sixteenth in the world for overall health according to Time Health and the 2014 Commonwealth Fund survey. What ripple(s) may be creating ailing Americans? Continue reading
We have all seen kid-friendly menus at restaurants and events where convenience food is considered a necessary evil for living a modern fast-paced lifestyle. We often do not consider the long term consequences of feeding our kids toxic foods or even know what the actual consequences might be. If you have been raised on fast food and pre-packaged grocery store items, then you most likely have continued to eat this way as an adult. Therefore, you teach your kids the same diet plan.
“I can’t get my child to eat healthy food.” Continue reading
“You must be the change you want to see in the world.” – Ghandi
This quote has resonated with me for decades. I found myself talking about change today – as a I often do. I quoted Ghandi and normalized why change is so difficult for people, governments, religions, and powerful entities. It’s not only hard to create change within a system, it is equally difficult for the system to embrace substantial change. Although I talk about the semantics, psychology, and resisters of change, I don’t always validate the power it takes for change to come from within. Continue reading
“My child won’t behave.” That’s what I used to think about my child’s behavioral issues. He just won’t mind me. Professionals boldly told me that I needed better parenting skills with my son. “Keep a routine and never tell him ‘no'” were clinical suggestions which made things worse, not better. I had to discipline my child despite his needs in order to keep him from being totally defiant. Continue reading
If you are looking for answers to your child’s health and behavioral needs, allow me to introduce you to an innovative approach which puts your child at the center of his/her care. The goal of treatment is to discover underlying causes of illness and behavioral challenges to provide healing versus medicating symptoms. Continue reading
In a time when conflict abounds, surrounds, & confounds us, we must remain resolute. We have the power to choose chaos or peace. Freud described conflicting internal forces-which were later labeled as “Eros versus Thanatos” or “life versus death”- as innate life instincts. Eros leads us to procreate, survive, and focus on continuing life whereas Thanatos is self-destructive and potentially life-threatening. The biblical explanation of these internal conflicts takes us to the very beginning of sin with Adam & Eve – a.k.a.”sin nature.” Ask yourself a simple question, Continue reading
Are you ready to change your thoughts about food? I find myself struggling with the knowledge I have sought about food versus the knowledge I learned from teachers, the FDA, the Food Guide Pyramid, and the media. I learned to blindly trust “experts” and textbooks. I was a food & nutrition teacher and I perpetrated lies about food as truth. It must be a “Southern thing.” Radicals, they are all radicals! It’s amazing how we use defense mechanisms (psycho-analytics) to avoid and deny alternative explanations and rational thoughts. Continue reading
Why are we desensitized to images of GMO foods, chemical additives, and unhealthy food choices which make us chronically ill? As I searched images for this blog post, I typed-in key words “toxic food, GMO, and unhealthy food.” To my dismay, I found countless images of enticing and mouth watering foods – which are part of my diet. Images of crops being sprayed with chemicals did not alarm me. Images of wheat stalks – which no longer look like “amber waves of grain” or the wheat of biblical times Continue reading
